Where children are known, trusted, and challenged

New Plymouth Montessori is a community-based, not-for-profit school for children aged 3–12. We are New Plymouth’s only Montessori school and one of the longest-running Montessori schools in Aotearoa.

We are a small, established school with deep roots in the local community. Families choose us because they want a calm, grounded environment where children are known well and learning is taken seriously.

The school environment

Our school is set on large, established grounds that give children space to move, explore, and work outdoors every day. The outdoor environment is not separate from learning. It is part of the school day.

Children garden, build, problem-solve, and collaborate outside, developing physical confidence and a strong connection to the natural world. The pace outside is the same as inside: purposeful, calm, and child-led.

Our classrooms

Classrooms are thoughtfully set up to support focus, independence, and responsibility. Each space is designed to feel ordered and welcoming, not busy or overstimulating.

Children move through the day with confidence, knowing where things belong and what is expected of them. This consistency supports a strong sense of belonging and security.

Our teachers

Our teachers are fully qualified and experienced in Montessori education. They actively choose Montessori as their teaching practice and commit to ongoing professional learning.

Consistency matters to children. Many of our staff have long tenures at the school, providing stability and strong relationships over time. Teachers work closely with families and know each child well.

The Casa

The Casa offers education from early childhood – ages 2 1/2 to 6 years. This continuity allows children to grow within a familiar environment, without constant resets or transitions.

Children build strong relationships, confidence, and capability over time, supported by adults who understand their learning journey.

The Primary

Families may choose to continue their Montessori education through our Montessori Primary class at Westown School - just a short walk up the road from our Casa.

Community-based and not-for-profit

New Plymouth Montessori is governed by a parent-led board and operates as a not-for-profit school. Decisions are made in the best interests of children and the wider school community.

Families are encouraged to engage with the school in ways that feel realistic and meaningful.
